On
Saturday, February 21st, 2004 at 8PM & 10:30PM,
the Inter-Media Art Center (IMAC) in Huntington,
Long Island will present a concert with jazz guitarist EARL
KLUGH.
An
acoustic guitarist with a very pretty tone, Earl Klugh
was putting the “smooth” into jazz long before
there was an official radio format, debuting the light-hearted,
easy funk style that’s become his trademark. Klugh
thinks of Chet Atkins as being his most important
influence. Klugh played on a Yusef Lateef
album when he was 15 and gained recognition in 1971 for
his contributions to George Benson's “White
Rabbit” record. He played regularly with Benson in 1973,
was a member of Return to Forever
briefly in 1974, and then in the mid-'70s, began recording
as a leader. Klugh's popular recordings (for
Blue Note, Capitol, Manhattan, and Warner Bros.) tend to use
light funk beats, stick closely to the melody, and put the
emphasis on his sound.
Over
the course of nearly 30 albums, Klugh has
not only stuck to his guns in the face of shifting musical
trends but has also become, in the modern smooth jazz genre,
one of the most imitated acoustic guitar icons. After making
a single song appearance on the popular Melrose Place soundtrack,
the Detroit native- after a twelve album stint on Warner Brothers
Records- joins Windham Hill’s growing roster of veteran
jazz great with the long awaited release of Peculiar
Situation.
