On Friday, September 12th, 2008 at 7PM & 9:30PM, the Inter-Media Art Center (also known as “IMAC”) in Huntington, Long Island will present an evening with vocal group The Manhattan Transfer.

It’s been nearly thirty-five years since Tim Hauser paid his bills by driving a New York City cab while aspiring to form a harmony vocal quartet that could authentically embrace varied musical styles, and still create something unique.  That dream became The Manhattan Transfer.  In the mid 70’s, the group began performing regularly throughout New York City in cutting edge cabaret venues.  The group released their self-titled debut in 1975; the second single from the album, a remake of the Friendly Brothers gospel classic “Operator,” gave the group their first national hit.

In 1979, The Manhattan Transfer scored another smash hit with “Twilight Zone/ Twilight Tone”.  They also earned their first two Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Fusion Performance and Best Arrangement For Voices.  The group went from strength to strength, when in 1981, they became the first group ever to win Grammy Awards in both Pop and Jazz categories in the same year with their hits “Boy From New York City” and “Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)”.  The Manhattan Transfer closed out the decade by completing a ten-year sweep (1980-1990) as the “Best Vocal Group” in both the annual DownBeat and Playboy jazz polls.

Celebrating their 35th Anniversary this year, The Manhattan Transfer have cemented their status as one of the most important and innovative vocal groups in the history of popular music.  The Manhattan Transfer is: Tim Hauser, Janis Siegel, Alan Paul, and Cheryl Bentyne.

Tickets for this performance are $65.00 ($49.00 for IMAC Members).  For tickets or further information on this performance, or on other IMAC programs, call IMAC's 24-hour Arts-Line at (631) 549-ARTS.   Tickets can also be purchased at the theater from noon to 6PM, Tuesday through Friday, 2PM to 6PM on Saturdays and after 2PM on the day of the performances.   For further information, call IMAC's business office at (631) 549-9666.
