On Saturday, October 18th, 2008 at 8PM, the Inter-Media Art Center (also known as “IMAC”) in Huntington, Long Island will present an evening with jazz pianist McCoy Tyner- The McCoy Tyner Quartet. This concert will also feature legendary jazz saxophonist Gary Bartz and opening remarks by jazz and media critic Gene Seymour.   The line-up also features Gerald Cannon (bass) and Eric Kamau Gravatt (drums).

It is not an overstatement to say that modern jazz has been shaped by the music of McCoy Tyner.  His blues-based piano style, replete with sophisticated chords and an explosively percussive left hand has transcended conventional styles to become one of the most identifiable sounds in improvised music.  His harmonic contributions and dramatic rhythmic devices form the vocabulary of a majority of jazz pianist.

McCoy Tyner was at the core of what became one of the most seminal groups in jazz history, The John Coltrane Quartet.  The band, saxophonist John Coltrane, drummer Elvin Jones, bassist Jimmy Garrison and Tyner had an extraordinary chemistry, fostered in part by Tyner’s almost familial relationship with Coltrane.  He performed on Coltrane’s classical recordings such as Live at the Village Vanguard, Impressions and Coltrane’s signature suite, A Love Supreme.  As a composer and band leader, McCoy Tyner has work with such luminaries as Joe Henderson, Avery Sharpe, Aarron Scott, Michael Brecker, Stanley Clarke and many others.  Tyner has released nearly 80(!) albums under his name, earned four Grammys and was awarded Jazz Master from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2002.  IMAC Theater is thrilled to welcome this living legend to our stage!!

This concert is presented with support from the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation.
