On Saturday, April 8th, 2006 at 8 &
10:30PM, the Inter-Media Art Center (also known as “IMAC”)
in Huntington, Long Island will present a special acoustic
concert with improvisational trio Medeski, Martin &
Wood.
Originally formed in 1991, Medeski, Martin
& Wood have risen from their roots in the New York underground
to become one of the best known improvisational ensembles
around, initially spending years crisscrossing the country
in an RV to build their audience. Playing music together
for the first time that summer of 1991; there was an instant
connection- described by all three as being very natural,
very organic and very strong. As complicated as their individual
pasts might have been, their collective future together
as a band had just become extremely simple- stick together
and make music.
Perched in the middle of a small fortress
of instruments (Hammond B3 organ, clavinet, wurltizer, arp
string ensemble, mellotron, Yamaha CS synth, melodica and
a piano), John Medeski takes one the appearance of a mad
scientist: arms flying, head bobbing, lips uttering alien
sounds…all with the intense look of Superman exercising
his x-ray vision.
Like John, Billy Martin sits in the center
of his own musical universe on stage- surrounded by his
drum kit, scraps of metal, various wood blocks, percussion
pieces from Africa, Brazil and Asia, and other random “stuff”
that he’s collected through the years. While Medeski
seems to orbit the galaxy and back, Martin’s stage
presence appears more grounded to the roots of this planet
with a steady nod and a boom-bat bounce.
With John and Billy seated behind their
respective rigs, Chris Wood is the only member of the band
that actually stands on stage. Front and center with nothing
to hide, Chris is the most exposed to the audience and the
most comfortable, dancing with his 1920 acoustic German
bass or bouncing to one of his classic electrics- an early
70s Hoffner, 66 Fender Precision or a 65 Fender Jazz).
Tickets for this performance are $37.50
($28.50 for IMAC Members). For tickets or further information
