On
Friday, September 28th at 8:00PM & 10:30PM, the
Inter-Media Art Center in Huntington, Long Island will host a
concert with rhythm and blues Motown artist MARTHA REEVES AND
THE VANDELLAS.
Like
many soul and R&B singers, Martha Reeves musical roots
were gospel. Growing
up in Detroit, Michigan, Martha sites her mother as her
greatest inspiration and teacher.
A graduate of Northeastern High School, she studied
voice under the direction of Abraham Silver who also coached
Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson of the Supremes and Bobby
Rogers of the Miracles.
After
hearing Martha sing, William Stevenson, A&R Director of
Hitsville, USA, approached her and suggested she come to
work for him. While she worked as a secretary in the A&R department,
she recorded several releases on the Check-Mate label
with the Del-phis (soon to be the Vandellas).
Berry Gordy, after being asked his opinion of a demo
record Martha had sung for William Stevenson, became
interested in her talents.
The groups name changed to Martha Reeves and the
Vandellas. Hits of theirs include: Come and Get These Memories, Heatwave,
Dancing in the Street, and Jimmy Mack.
The
love movement, the flower children of the Sixties, the dance
craze generation and all music lovers in the USA
and aboard accredit Martha Reeves and the Vandellas as a great
influence on musical history.
Tickets for
this performance are $35.00 general public ($26.50 for IMAC
Members) and can be obtained by calling IMAC's 24-hour
