On Friday, November
5th, 2004 at 9PM, the Inter-Media Art Center (also known
as “IMAC”) in Huntington, Long Island will present
a concert with “newgrass”/ Americana innovators
PETER ROWAN, TONY RICE and SLAID CLEAVES.
Peter Rowan, Tony Rice and Slaid Cleaves are three of the
most influential musicians in Americana and “newgrass”
music. They have spent their respective careers creating
and transforming music with their renowned innovation and
individuality. They are also at ease in a broad variety
of musical genres, as well as widely recognized for expanding
musical boundaries in their respective solo and collaborative
efforts.
Peter Rowan was one of the major cult bluegrass artists
of the ‘80s, winning a devoted international fan base
through his independent records and constant touring. A
skilled singer/ songwriter, Rowan also yodeled and played
numerous stringed instruments and the saxophone. He has
performed with Jim Rooney, Bill Keith, Bill Monroe and his
Blue Grass Boys, David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, John Kahn
and rock/bluegrass with Mexican Airforce.
A maverick of the flat-picked acoustic guitar, Tony Rice
was the first instrumentalist to seize upon the innovations
of guitarists like Clarence White and Doc Watson and propel
them into new flights of rhythmic, harmonic and textural
virtuosity. By doing so in the context of a bluegrass and
“newgrass” band, he redefined that instrument’s
role in bluegrass and raised the bar of a new generation
of acoustic six-stringers.
One of the finest singer/ songwriter from Texas, Slaid
Cleaves features all the strengths that have drawn him a
loyal following. His songs remain literate, emotionally
vivid and concisely colorful. Known for his acoustic-based
songs, Slaid can also rock hard with electric-based music
as well. Slaid Cleaves is a winner of the prestigious Kerrville
Folk Festival’s New Folk competition- an award previously
given to such striking talents as Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl
Keen and Steve Earle.
