On Saturday, May
7th, 2005 at 8PM & 10:30, the Inter-Media Art Center
(also known as “IMAC”) in Huntington, Long Island
will present a concert with Diane Schuur and The Caribbean
Jazz Project.
Diane Schuur was just a child when she
fell in love with the voice of the "Queen of the Blues,"
Dinah Washington, a voice that carried her through the loneliness
and homesickness of living in a residential school for the
blind. But her blindness has not proved too great an obstacle
for her to overcome - she was signed to a record company
when she was just 17, and by the mid-70's she was making
waves at California jazz festivals. Saxophonist Stan Getz
was awed by her voice and became her mentor. Her big break
came when he took her along to a White House performance
that was broadcast on public television and was seen by
GRP president Larry Rosen -- and the rest is history in
the making! Her energy and enthusiasm make it hard for Diane
- or Deedles to her friends - to stay seated at her piano
when she performs - and it's just as hard for the audience
to stay seated!
With sizzling riffs and smooth sound, The
Caribbean Jazz Project is a perfect way to warm up from
the spring. The Caribbean Jazz Project is led by marimba/vibraphonist
Dave Samuels, best known for his two decades with the jazz-fusion
super-group Spyro Gyra and a variety of other outstanding
musicians. The group’s repertoire has a decidedly
Latin bent, with such tunes as Dizzy Gillespie’s classic
“A Night in Tunisia,” Alec Wilder’s great
ballad “Moon and Sand” and Samuels’ “Ivory
Coast” which he recorded on his 1989 album Ten Degrees
North, along with a treasure trove of original tunes.
Tickets for this performance are $40.00
($30.00 for IMAC Members). For tickets or further information
