From Friday, October 15th through Saturday,
January 15th, the Inter-Media Art Center in Huntington,
Long Island will host an exhibition of paintings by HULBERT
WALDROUP. His current exhibit is ARTIST WITH AN ATTITUDE.
Hulbert’s work uses imagines and painting styles to
provoke thoughts, feelings and emotions that cause the viewer
to stop in shock and ask “what is the artist trying
to say?”.
Hulbert Waldroup, who started painting
over 10 years ago without formal education, is no stranger
to controversy. This self taught artist’s works have
drawn ire, protest, praise and discussion about art and
freedom of expression. From “The Devil’s Palace”,
an oil on canvas work that caused a ruckus at an art show
in the Thompson Center in Chicago to his 1999 mural about
the shooting/murder of immigrant Amadou Diallo in NYC, Waldroup’s
art is thought provoking. Of his work, he said “I’ve
had my art vandalized or stolen, but I think that’s
a badge of honor if I can move somebody to that point. If
it doesn’t make you stop and look, then I’ve
failed as an artist and that’s what so many artists
out here today do. I mean it matches your living room set
and it doesn’t say anything.”
Waldroup creates portrait paintings and
pop-art work on the streets of SoHo and in Greenwich Village.
Celebrity collectors Whoopi Goldberg and Quentin Tarantino
have purchased his work. His website is www.waldroupart.com.
His current exhibit features works that highlight the Harlem
jazz era and activist art works. IMAC is thrilled to welcome
this rebel artist to our gallery. This is a not-to-be-missed
exhibition rarely seen on Long Island! We challenge the
public to view this outstanding artist and his works which
will leave you stimulated, amused and provoked.
Admission to this exhibition is free of charge. Gallery
hours are from Tuesday to Friday, noon to 6PM, and from
2 to 6PM on Saturday show days. IMAC is closed on Sunday
and Monday. For further information on this exhibition,
